Examples of Student Use of Technology Tools

4th Grade Podcast--Multiplication Properties
http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=54172&title=4th_grade_podcast___multiplication_properties_

This is a student-created podcast that identifies the properties of multiplication.  The objective behind the activity is to explain and use multiplication properties, such as zero, identity, commutative, and associative. These properties are listed under the 4th grade Georgia Performance Standards as M4N7c.  Working in small groups, students use kinesthetic learning to teach and display the multiplication properties.  Not only do students create movements to show their property, they also recite the properties aloud and give definitions.  After watching this podcast, I tried it with my 4th graders.  My students were put into groups and had to complete the following activities:  (1) Create a poster displaying the definition and examples of the property, (2) Create a song about the property, and (3) Create a movement showing how the property works.  My students enjoyed it immensely.  They said that they had fun!  This podcast demonstrates that students are capable of creating their own ways to identify the properties of multiplication.  Using technology gives students the opportunity to share their learning experiences with other children their age.

Using KidPix to describe the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is a student-created slideshow that identifies and describes the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Students used KidPix to depict different stages in Dr. King's life.  The objective behind the activity was to describe the life of this influential and famous American.  Students used pictures, colors, dates, and words to write this biography.  Each small pair of students had their own slide to display an event in Dr. King's life.  The slides went in order from his birth up to his death.  This activity can be applied to any grade level as most grade levels learn about specific people in social studies.  However, it could also be used as a reading/language arts activity in which students learn about a person and have to tell about their  life by creating a biography.  This is a fun and creative way for students to show what they have learned about a specific figure in history.  In addition to identifying important events, students practice the skill of sequence in order to put the events in order.  This slideshow demonstrates that students are capable of creating biographies that use technology and creativity, versus the traditional pencil and paper essays.  Students can easily share their slideshows with others to reveal their learning.

Class Blog Page
http://classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=36382&assignmentid=9245

This is a class blog page in which the teacher posts assignments and students reply in the form of a blog. The blog's assignments are related to 4th grade standards, covering topics like poetry, Revolutionary War, and science fair.  You can view all of the students' posts to the question the teacher provides.  The assignments are listed individually in which students can easily access them.  This activity can apply to any grade level, as the teacher can post curriculum-related questions that check understanding and learning.  In addition, this activity provides for actual student learning because students are responding to questions that are discussed in class.  They are giving ideas about what they have learned about a particular topic.  Since all posts can be read, students learn from one another.  This blog page demonstrates that students are capable of communicating with the teacher and each other through blogs.  They are given opportunities to learn from one another through the use of the technology in a fun and creative way.
